During the 12-month period ending December 31, 2014, 936,795 cases were filed in federal bankruptcy courts, down from the 1,071,932 bankruptcy cases filed in calendar year 2013—a 12.6 percent drop in filings.

Chapter 7 Discharges Down 35% from ’12
In the first half of 2014, there were 310,210 Chapter 7 Discharges. This reflects a 35% decline in Chapter 7 Discharges compared to the first half of 2012 which totaled 477,367.

The top 10 states for Chapter 7 Discharges comprise 54.7% of all discharges year-to-date. Leading the pack is California with 15% of the total Discharges and over twice as many as the runner-up, Florida.
